Nordic Walking tracks

I didn’t get to do much walking in Hawaii, just didn’t feel up to it with my cold.  However, Sunday afternoon we went down to Annini Beach to do some snorkeling and I finally took my poles for a walk.  It’s fun to walk in the sand, different from all the other walks we do here . . . → Read More: Nordic Walking tracks

Arboretum Outdoors with Hoigaards

The plan was to snowshoe at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on Friday.  But mother nature had other plans and we had no snow.  What to do?  Take out the Nordic walking poles of course!

Over the course of the afternoon we had about 45 walkers come out to try the poles. Everyone from young children to grandmas . . . → Read More: Arboretum Outdoors with Hoigaards

Outdoor Dark Days Challenge

If you’re reading this blog you’re probably wondering what all the food talk is all about.  Once again this year I am participating in the Dark Days Challenge, started by my daughter a few years ago.  It’s a challenge to cook using local and sustainable ingredients during the dark days of winter.  Most of the other . . . → Read More: Outdoor Dark Days Challenge

Dark Days Challenge week 2

People are creative in the midwest.  When the ground freezes they turn to hydroponics to grow fresh lettuce and tomatoes all year round.  We have Bushel Boy, a local Minnesota company and I’ve just discovered Future Farm Food and Fuel LLC from Baldwin, Wisconsin. Their marketing tag is “a deeper shade of green” and it’s amazing . . . → Read More: Dark Days Challenge week 2

#1 Dark Days Challenge

It’s the dark days of winter and the Dark Days Challenge is on again this year.  My daughter Laura started it a few years ago, challenging all of us to cook one completely local meal each week during the winter.  Being her mom and responsible raising her on the family “gentleman’s farm” as her grandpa called . . . → Read More: #1 Dark Days Challenge

In October of 2007 I went to Italy with my daughter Laura.  We had 10 magical days including a day of hiking the Cinque Terre.  I can close my eyes and see the villages perched on the coastal mountains, the fishing boats lifted up into the streets, the olive trees ready for harvest.  It’s a beautiful . . . → Read More: Memories of Cinque Terre

Fall Walking Tips

I love walking in the fall.  After the heat and thunderstorms of the summer it’s wonderful to have the cooler weather even if it comes with shorter days.  There’s just something special about shuffling through the leaves on the trails.

Nordic Walk for Wolves

It was a dark and stormy day but the rain stopped, the clouds broke, and the wind died down in time for us to enjoy the 2nd Annual Nordic Walk for Wolves last evening.  We celebrated the summer solstice with a 5K Nordic Walk at French Regional Park to benefit the International Wolf Center.  Our pack . . . → Read More: Nordic Walk for Wolves

Nordic Walk for Wolves

With the summer solstice approaching I start to feel very connected to nature.  Nothing like the pull of a totally balanced day to send me daydreaming about all the possibilities for our world.  I sense the web of life, all things interacting in respect and understanding, stretched across the universe including all of life.

It’s that basic . . . → Read More: Nordic Walk for Wolves
