Day 11 It’s COLD!

Frigid cold and dangerous wind chill when moving down hill!  You know it’s cold when the snow squeeks and you can’t ski away from the chairlift at the top of the hill.  All human skin needed to be covered or risk frostbite.

But we’re from Minnesota!  how often I’ve said that this year.  Sure we can handle it, yes we have all the best warm technical gear. But it doesn’t mean I enjoy wearing all of it at the same time.  Fashion goes right out the window when it’s below zero and you’re determined to ski.  My niece Michelle was on the lift at 8:15am doing a work ski around for Moonlight Basin.  She was told she looked “portly”;  she had long underwear,  T neck fleece, down vest, down jacket and her work jacket all on her slim trim body.  Of course she looked portly but she was warm!  or at least as warm as you can be in that kind of cold.

It was 3 runs and in. Mind you three runs at Moonlight is about 75 minutes from first lift to kicking your skis off and running in for hot chocolate.  The good news: The snow was fantastic once you got off the top.  We had fresh tracks in Single Jack and Marshall and fast groomers on that 3rd run to get us in quick.

Kudos to all who go out in the cold!  it’s invigorating and challenging. and now it can warm up.

Day 10 Skiing is like a dance with the Mountain

We first came to Big Sky in 1990.  Dan and I drove out with our three kyds in our converted van packed full of gear and winter vacation essentials.  It was the beginning of a love affair with Lone Peak.  Since then we’ve returned almost every year. I always look forward to coming back, it feels a bit like going home.

I was an accomplished skier when we first came out and felt pretty confident about my ability to ski the whole mountain. That doesn’t mean, however, that there weren’t times that I got to the top of a hill, looked down and questioned what I was thinking!  Stump Farm, Challenger, Liberty Bowl all had the potential to take my breath away.  Even the Cat Trips with Montana Backcountry gave me butterflies.

My mantra in those situations: It all starts with one turn.  Once I point my skis down the hill, reach for that first turn and then make the next one and the next, it’s all ok.  It’s the rhythm of the mountain, the boots and skis working together, and of course the cheerleading of my family and friends that moves me down the steeps and deeps of this beautiful place.

Bruce and I skied together yesterday at Big Sky.  We had a great day in a few inches of new snow, skiing our favorite glades and trails all over the mountain.  On each run I was surrounded by memories of other times we’ve been there, other people we’ve skied it with and snow conditions that ranged from awesome or terrible.  Each one their own dance with the mountain.  One more memory to add to the collection.

Day 9 Spring Nordic Walking Classes are updated!

I am such a creature of habit and this trip is kicking my butt.  I sleep in, no morning walk, hours on the mountain followed by evenings of wine and good food.  At least I still go to bed early 🙂

Dan traveled back to MN yesterday for a workshop. Bruce and I decided to take the day off after all the deep snow skiing we’d done.  The most I moved was to walk to the car and drive down to the Meadows for bread and milk.  The rest of the day was spent updating the Nordic Walking calendar on this website, knitting, and trying to finish The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

It felt like more of a gift, not a waste.  I’m excited about all the Nordic Walking that is scheduled for this spring.  There is a little something for everyone from free walks at the MN Landscape Arboretum, introductory classes, workshops, and 5K events that are welcoming pole walkers for the first time.  Check it out!  There is an energy in the air, maybe this is the year that it happens and thousands of walkers make the healthy choice to add poles.

Weather is moving in.  Snow today, cold tomorrow and blizzard conditions by Thursday nite.  It’s mountain skiing, good thing we’re from Minnesota so we can handle all of this.

Day 8 Deep Snow!

It was steep and deep yesterday at Moonlight Basin!  After almost a foot of new snow in the past 48 hours and just enough wind to fill in the tracks it was a great day to be out.

The best thing about Moonlight is that even tho it was a Holiday Monday there weren’t any crowds there.  Surely there were more than a typical weekend day but it still feels like you have the mountain to yourself when you choose one of the gladed tree runs or do a short climb up into Horseshoe Bowl.  Even at 3pm we had fresh tracks down the bowl. Awesome!

Dan hit an embankment on Sunday and has hurt his ribs so he wasn’t with us yesterday.  bummer.  Just not the same without him on the hills.  Hopefully he’ll be good to go when he gets back from doing business in Mpls.  He’ll be gone til late Thursday.  Price you pay when clients want your attention.

Day 7 Family on the mountain

Growing up I skied Saturdays with my brothers in Blizzard.  When my own kyds were growing up we skied Saturdays with my brother, sisters, nieces and nephews in Blizzard.  As everyone grows up and goes on with their life the opportunities to ski together as a family have become fewer.  But yesterday there were 5 of us together at Moonlight Basin enjoying new snow and gladed runs all day long.

Moonlight is a bit of a treasure.  Even at 4pm when Bruce, my older brother, and I went for one last run, there was wonderful pockets of snow hidden along the edges of the runs and into the trees.  What a treat!

We also had a visitor at the condo last night, looking for handouts.

Day 6 A day off…

Sometimes life throws you a curve.  I had planned to ski my new Nemesis today at Moonlight.  Instead I got up and pulled a muscle in my upper back.  Guess favoring that torn rotator cuff muscle in my left shoulder has put stress and strain on my back.  The muscle went into a spasm and it took me all day on ice and stretching to get it to relax and let me breathe again.

So I did some reading, some work on Nordic Walking Queen spring class schedule, and napping with my ice pack.    Spose to snow so tomorrow is another day.

Day 5 Fresh snow and old friends

I have to admit I was disappointed when we first arrived and conditions were marginal for skiing. But the past two days have been awesome.  Fresh snow, time with old friends and the last run from the top of the triple all the way to the base.  Just doesn’t get any better!

Skiing loose snow and soft bumps takes a lot of energy and a bit of technique.  It’s different from skiing the Minnesota hard pack that we usually encounter.  Lessons learned play in my head as I play in the snow.  I hear my daughter Laura:  Turn your skis downhill!  Turn in the snow!  Keep your hands up and keep touching your pole!  Turn!  Turn!  Turn!

I fly through the snow and down the hill, grinning under my gaitor and laughing out loud with joy.

Day 4 New Snow!

It was a Pocket Rocket Day!  That means there was fresh snow at Big Sky.

It’s amazing how fast the mountain can change, from windswept hardpack snow to inches of powder.  The wind is still with us but it was glorious day.   Everyone had snow fever, we skied from 10am-4pm with a few necessary warm ups (with the snow came cold ), and skied most of our favorite runs all over the mountain.

On one such warm up we saw Cheryl and Stu Savage, fellow Blizzard Instructors from years past, in the chalet.  Turns out they’re staying in the condo just above us. I love those skiing connections!  Cheryl is even considering the HOW trip to Beaver Creek. yea!

With the full moon rising we drove down to Michelle and Brian’s house in the Meadows .  It was family time with a hot tub, dog play and grilled pork chops for dinner.  As we left there was a mama moose and her yearling calf wandering through the bank parking lot.  Perfect ending to a beautiful day.

There’s snow on the mountains, all is right in the world.

Day 3

Big Sky went on wind hold with 75mph winds on the mountain so we went snowshoeing.

Believe it or not Dan has never been out on his snowshoes.  I got him a really nice pair for Christmas to entice him to go out but he’s never made the time.  Today he had no excuses.  We did Lee’s Pool again, 3 miles up the side of the mountain to beautiful views of Lone Peak and Fan Mountain.  The clouds were stacking up, promises of snow for later but in the woods we were out of the wind and once again enjoyed being out on trail.

It was too cold for a picnic in the woods so we ended up at Maadison once again for lunch.  The afternoon featured a short nap with time to do some knitting.  By the time we went up to The Cabin to have a drink with Michelle at 7pm it was puking snow.  Perhaps a pocket rocket day?

Dark Days Challenge #5

Being on vacation is no excuse for not cooking locally.  In fact every where you go in Montana there are signs and ads reminding you to purchase locally.  I’m mixing Minnesota and Montana and looking forward to putting together meals that feature the best of both.

Our first dinner included rainbow carrots, potatoes and onions carried from Minnesota and roasted with MN butter of course.  Flank Steak from a local grass fed ranch grilled to perfection.  Bread from the Blue Moon bakery here on the mountain and a dessert of blueberry something featuring blue berries from my freezer.  Simple and a perfect blend.
