The question of Nordic Walking vs Trekking Poles

“What is the difference between Nordic Walking and Trekking Poles?”

Being an equipment junkie I love that question. First because it means that people are beginning to understand that there is a difference and second because I get the chance to educate them about those differences, helping them to make a good decision about the poles they will purchase.

In a nutshell:  Trekking or hiking poles are designed for hiking or walking on uneven ground.  Their job is enhancing stability and balance on the trail.  You might be carrying a back pack or simply on a day hike but if you are on a trail going up or down hills that features rocks and other obstacles you are trekking.  A trekking pole looks more like a downhill ski pole and typically has 3 sections to adjust small enough to fit into a backpack and tall enough for your personal height.  It is the “mountain bike” of the pole world.

Nordic Walking poles are all about fitness walking.  Although stability and balance is definitely one of the many advantages of adding poles to your walk it is not their primary purpose.  Nordic Walking poles are used to increase heart rate and calorie burn, engage more muscles, and add a strength component to your basic walk. They typically look more similar to a cross country ski pole altho there are some that come strapless.  Nordic Walking poles are the “road bike” of poles.

Now can you use a trekking pole to Nordic Walk?  The reason we have specially designed poles is so that we can match the equipment to the activity.  If I really want to reap all the benefits of the poles I need the pole that is made specifically for Nordic Walking.  And I will tell you to buy the best pole that you can afford to purchase.  Purchasing equipment is an investment in health, not just a decision about what to have for lunch.  Be sure to buy the pole that you will be excited about using 5 years from now.  We want you to be Nordic Walking for miles and miles!

Nordic Walking Season Kick Off!

What a week!

Saturday was our first Nordic Walking class of 2011. Thank you to Julie for stepping in to introduce 13 newbies to the joys of Nordic Walking.

Hoigaard’s Nordic Walking Tuesdays kicked off at Thomas Beach on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, 13 walkers.

Wednesday I was at a corporate wellness event sharing Hoigaard’s passion for healthy outdoor lifestyles with 1200 employees in 4 hours.  Wonder how many are thinking of trying the poles.

Arboretum Outdoors with Hoigaard’s was Thursday featuring free Nordic Walking at 1pm and 6pm.  A total of 38 walkers during the afternoon.

Friday I snuck out of the International Wolf Center Retreat at lunch time taking 7 women with me for a quick walk down to the lake and back.

Finished the week this morning at Richfield Community Wellness Expo once again talking “go green, not screen” in an effort to get people to go outdoors and play.

Results for the first week:  71 Nordic Walkers on trail!  and even better – seeing my walking friends after our long winter!  It was so good to reconnect and catch up with their lives while we enjoyed our walks.  Nordic Walking Talking, I love it!

Hope to see you all soon!

Watching the snow melt…

Time slows down when you’re in recovery mode.

I had shoulder surgery on Monday, same problem as in 2001, bone spurs that were shredding tendons and muscles.  I hate getting old. Good news is that this time it’s much less painful and by the end of June I’ll be back with all my favorite summer activities.  Just so you know, this was not a result of any one thing, I don’t do dangerous risky sports.  I just have a very active lifestyle and at 59 years of age have to pay the price for all that.

It’s not easy slowing down.  Post op requires lots of naps and simply watching the world outside my windows.  I’ve been blessed with 3 beautiful sunny days and the snow is slowly disappearing, I hope for the last time this season. Even so, the days pass slowly and I know I’ll be practicing patience over the next 4 weeks of wearing a sling.

Not to worry tho, Nordic Walking Queen classes and events will be carried on as planned thanks to my Nordic walking friends. It’s wonderful to have so much support through the community!  Thanks to everyone who is stepping in for me!

Vanilla Walking

It’s good to be home and back in the groove.  Not everyone would consider getting up at 5:30am to walk a good thing but it’s what I’ve done for 26 years and I love starting my day with an early morning walk.

But it’s different right now.  My left rotator cuff is torn and I can’t walk with my poles, can’t paddle my boat, can’t ride my bike. (Good thing I could ski these past five weeks.)  Bummer, big bummer.  Nancy Hanily-Dolan calls it vanilla walking when we walk without poles.  When we walk with our poles it’s a hot fudge sundae with a cherry on top.  I never order vanilla ice cream, I’m a chocolate girl through and through.  I miss my poles.

Monday morning I go in for shoulder surgery to repair the damage.  Recovery includes 4 weeks in a sling and then a total of three months to heal the tendons.  Looks like I won’t be fully operative til July 4th.  In the meantime I’ve got fellow instructors and Nordic Walkers who have volunteered to help with my April classes and events and I’ll look forward to celebrating a reconstructed shoulder with fireworks on the 4th.

In the meantime, we now have another 4 inches of snow on the ground.  Gail and I are going to walk indoors at Ridgedale in the morning.

Day 32 Home again

We left Bozeman at 5:30am with the full moon setting behind us in the west.  Thirteen and a half hours later we pulled into home with the full moon rising in the east.  AHHHH!  Hot tub, wine, bed.  In that order.  It’s great to be home.

Day 31 Moonlight Basin

Woke up to 5 inches of new snow “dense and supportive” according to the snow phone.  Grabbed our gear and headed out to end this trip at Moonlight Basin.  It was really busy when we arrived,   but as the snow came down harder and harder it got quieter and quieter on the slopes.   It snowed so hard that it was filling in our tracks each run. All afternoon we had fresh tracks down the gladed tree runs that we love.  Our chair lift mate summed it up so well.  “I can’t believe that after 4 1/2 weeks of skiing you are still so passionate and excited about skiing. You must really love it!”

Day 30 Last Day at Big Sky

We’re leaving on Thursday morning so today was our last day at Big Sky.  Michelle had the day off and it was a treat to ski with her all afternoon.  We ducked into Bear’s Lair for Sammy and hit Liberty Bowl when it opened mid afternoon for some sweet turns in 6 inches of new snow.

I’ve been skiing my Nordic Nemesis pretty exclusively since getting back from Beaver Creek.  If you had told me that my favorite all mountain ski would be 96 mm under foot I would never have believed you.  But this ski is great!  It really does everything I ask it to do, well maybe not those quick short fall line turns that Minnesotans are so fond of doing, but it does carve a nice turn on the groomers and excels in crud and deeper snow.  I love it!

Day 29 Lazy Day

We’d skied for 4 days in a row so it was time for a day off.  I sat with my computer working on Nordic Walking Queen updates and events, Hoigaard’s corporate contacts and my HOW eletter.  It snowed most of the day and often it was snowing sideways with the wind.  It won’t be a light fluffy now since it’s warm but the mountain got a bit of what it needed to fill in.  Tuesday should be fun.

I’ve been pondering this sabbatical.  One surprise, the amount of time we didn’t spend just the two of us together.   The evenings have been full of family, friends, HOW women, and recovering from travel.  True down time has actually been limited.  Not that it’s been a bad thing, just a surprise.

Being in the mountains for 4 weeks I expected we would have at least one big dump. But that hasn’t happened either.  We’ve had good snow, 3-6 inches, but no knee deep powder experiences.  Just watch, as soon as we hit the road it will start snowing!

Do you know what I wish I had with me?  an second pair of pj’s, my travel CD’s from my car (no I don’t have an Ipod, guess I need to get one), a long sleeve cotton T shirt (really thought I’d put that in),  my “get a grips” for walking on these slippery streets.

Spring Resolutions!

Winter is loosing her grip and snow is melting.  It’s that time of year Minnesotans start thinking of putting away their winter toys, getting out the grill and hitting the trails and lakes.  It’s also the time of year many take stock of the idle time of winter and vow to get out and get active.

It’s not easy to change those winter habits tho.  Getting up earlier, in the dark, is not fun. (don’t get me started about this early daylight savings plan)  I would always go for the chocolate donut over the yogurt even when thinking of swim suit season.

You know what you need, a plan and a buddy and 30 days to change a habit.

The good news – there are lots of motivating programs coming up this spring with great plans to get you moving.

Hennepin County’s Step To It starts May 9

Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation’s Women on the Move June 1-July 20

American Heart Association’s Start!Walking April 6

Map My Walk Marathon in 30 days challenge   goes until May 15, choose your own 30 days

Nordic Walking Queen will be doing lots of Nordic Walking classes, events and walking groups this spring.

Grab your buddy and get out there!

and in the meantime check out  your risk for Diabetes Type 2 on March 22 by taking the Diabetes Challenge.  Sometimes knowledge is the best motivator for changing your lifestyle.

Day 27/28 Last Weekend

When we began this sabbatical there were endless days of skiing ahead of us.  Now we’re counting down and beginning to look forward to going home.  It’s spring break in Montana and Big Sky is busy!  Good to see so many families out enjoying this beautiful mountain.  There’s lots of Minnesotans here.  Probably because it’s such an easy drive and it’s so family friendly.

We skied Moonlight both days, partly to avoid the crowds at Big Sky and partly because with the sunny warm days the snow is better on the north side.  Saturday we found soft pockets of fresh snow on some of our favorite runs, even the bumps stayed soft.  Sunday we skied with Michelle and Brian and even at the end of the day found fresh tracks through the trees on White Oak.

We’re back where we began in the Lake Condos.  Our last move, bed number 7.  It’s up 3 flights of stairs to the top floor, reminds me that I need to pack lighter and carry less with me when traveling.  Our plan is to ski thru Wednesday then drag it all down to the car and drive home early Thursday morning.  Of course the weather could alter our plans but right now there are no forecasts for big snows coming our way.
