Nordic Walk for Wolves

It was a dark and stormy day but the rain stopped, the clouds broke, and the wind died down in time for us to enjoy the 2nd Annual Nordic Walk for Wolves last evening.  We celebrated the summer solstice with a 5K Nordic Walk at French Regional Park to benefit the International Wolf Center.  Our pack included young and old, experienced Nordic Walkers and first timers, friends of the Wolf Center and lovers of nature.  Our original trail was very muddy and wet so we changed our route and walked down to the lake and back up the hill.  Thank you to everyone who came out to make this a great evening on the trail.

A special thank you to all of our sponsors this year:  LEKI, National Camera Exchange, Sexton Printing, Ciceron, Caribou Coffee,

And to all the staff and volunteers from the Wolf Center who helped organize and present this fun event – a howling good thank you!

Women on the Move!

Minneapolis Heart Foundation Institute does an amazing thing every summer.  They offer an 8 week training program for women, the goal is the Heart of Summer 5K Run / Walk the end of July.  Women have an option of walking, walk to run or running for their training choice.  Wednesday evenings start with a 20 minute talk on various health and fitness topics followed by getting out on the trails around Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis.

For the past 3 years Nordic Walking has made a guest appearance at Women on the Move.  This year we are a choice for the training.  There are 105 women registered, 13 chose Nordic Walking.  The first week we were excited to be there and to have 13 willing participants.  Hoigaard’s is providing their demo LEKI Nordic walking poles so everyone can give it a try.  Tonite was the second week and we had an additional 6 join us.  Pole envy!  How can you resist the opportunity to try this great way of walking?

It’s wonderful to be truly a part of this program this year.  Women on the move, making lifestyle changes for a healthier tomorrow.  Healthy Outdoor Lifestyles – Yea!

Nordic Walk for Wolves

With the summer solstice approaching I start to feel very connected to nature.  Nothing like the pull of a totally balanced day to send me daydreaming about all the possibilities for our world.  I sense the web of life, all things interacting in respect and understanding, stretched across the universe including all of life.

It’s that basic belief that prompted me to say yes when asked to join the International Wolf Center board.  Their mission is to teach the world about wolves.  Simple.  Teach so that we may understand, understand so that we may care, care so that we may take action on behalf of the wolf.  It goes deeper than just wolves.  It’s the wolf’s relationship to wild lands, the need for other species to survive and thrive so that the web, which we are deeply entwined into, will survive.

The 2nd Annual Nordic Walk for Wolves will be on Tuesday, June 21 at French Regional Park in Plymouth, MN. Registration starts at 6pm, a free Nordic Walking demo at 6:30 and the fun guided trail walk at 7pm.

It’s a unique event not only because it supports the International Wolf Center but also because it is a Nordic Walk that allows walkers as opposed to a running event that allows poles. The Wolf Center will be there to teach you more about wolves and our special relationship with them, poles will be available to use free of charge with ID.

I hope you’ll come “walk on all fours” with our pack and perhaps even howl a little on the longest day of the year.Make it a family outdoors event!   Registration is $25 for adults, $10 for 12-17yrs and $5 for under 12.

Paradise at Mt Ranier

After the winter we had and the late cold spring it might be hard to call it Paradise, but that’s where we were on Thursday night.  Paradise Inn on Mt Ranier with a 40 foot wall of snow in the parking lot.  I guess we’re the lucky ones, our snow is all gone, their’s will be with them for weeks to come.

We flew into Seattle for the holiday weekend, time with my daughter and son in law with a little extra to play at Ranier. We just didn’t realize that it would still be under snow.  But the lower elevations offered green and lush old, old forests.

Forests protected so that for generations to come they may know the “peace, tranquility and solitude of the forest”

Get started on the right foot, and hand, and foot, and hand

It’s been a miserable spring.  Cold and wet, not the best for walking outdoors. And the sign ups for Community Ed classes have been disappointing.  What’s happening?

Do we really give up our health and well being when it rains?  Do we need to offer more free demo’s to introduce people to the fun and fitness of Nordic Walking or maybe chocolate? in order to lure them into a class?  How do we get the word out about this amazing fitness activity?

Why take a class?  After all you just take two poles in your hands and go for a walk.  oh wait, there’s rhythm and technique and you want to get the most out of your poles. It’s not hard to do but it’s not intuitive since we are familiar with poles for skiing and hiking and this is different. It’s all about fitness.  It’s all about being healthy.  It’s all about working your own body weight and strength against the ground to create the best walk.

I’ve never had anyone take a class that wasn’t thrilled with what they gained from the experience.  It’s amazing what a little bit of knowledge, personal attention and feedback, and good form will do for a new activity.

If you’re thinking of taking up Nordic Walking, think about taking a class.  It will increase your enjoyment and the benefits that you receive from walking with poles.  Check out the Nordic Walking Queen calendar or Great Lakes Nordic Walking schedule to find a class that works for you.  I promise you’ll not be disappointed.

A Day with Richard Louv

Sometimes you just gotta love the day!

My day began with a walk with Gail, the sun came up in a perfect blue sky, and I got to go listen to Richard Louv.

Even if his name isn’t familiar, if you read this blog you’ve heard me refer to  his book “Last Child in the Woods”.  His concept of nature deficit disorder helped me appreciate all the days I dressed 12 children to go outdoors to play in all seasons.  It’s also part of what drives me to encourage everyone I know to get out! Outdoors that is, feet on the ground, hands in the dirt, breathless with the wonder of it all.

The first book was about children and “The Nature Principle” is about adults.  As humans we need to spend time in nature to be truly healthy in body, mind and spirit. How do we connect our communities, our schools, our businesses, our recreation, our families to the natural world around us that gives us life?

The Minnesota Connection Panel included representatives from tourism, conservation groups, child development, health care, developers, landscape architects, landscape designers, hunting and fishing interests and parks and recreation. It was inspiring to hear how “The Nature Principle”  will be guiding their missions and their programs going forward.

All this and the tulips were in full bloom!  Lock me out so I can go play!!!!

Nordic Walking and Nature

One of my favorite things about Nordic Walking is meeting so many wonderful people. I’ve had classes this week in Plymouth, Minnetonka and Wayzata and feel like I have lots of new friends.

The other favorite thing is the natural wonders we encounter along the way.  Here in Minnesota the birds are making their come back after a long winter.  From ruby breasted humming birds to the Great Blue Herons there are delights and surprises on every walk.  Last evening in Three River’s Regional French Park we were treated to Great Blues, Green Herons and a pair of red tailed hawks along with Canadian Geese, red wing black birds and smaller winged friends through the wetlands and woods.   The peepers are out of the winter hibernation and serenaded us from the marsh as the sun set on a beautiful spring day.

Sunday May 1 is the Annual Bud Break 5K at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  Nordic Walkers are invited to participate with poles for the first time, and it’s not too late to join us at 8am for registration.  Being an avid gardener the Arboretum is one of my favorite places to walk.  Regardless of the time of year you’ll find something of interest along the path, and there’s many miles of paths and trails to choose from.  This weekend there will be early spring blooms, the first splashes of color in the gardens.  I can’t wait!

Nordic Walking Open House- May 9, 2011

Last year it was the 2nd Annual North American Nordic Walking Expo.  This year Great Lakes Nordic Walkers is hosting a Nordic Walking Open House at Woodlake Nature Center in Richfield MN.  We wanted to do another local event to celebrate Nordic Walking and introduce lots of people to our favorite fitness activity.  Woodlake is a delightful spot for walking as well as just hanging out.  Just off Crosstown 62 and Lyndale Blvd this hidden gem is full of trees and soft trails.  It’s hard to believe you’re in the middle of the city.

This free event is designed for the curious and the experienced Nordic Walker.  There will be 30 minute clinics throughout the afternoon presented by the local experts from Great Lakes Nordic Walkers and Tom Rutlin of Exerstrider as our special guest.  Continuous introductory lessons will be offered with free use of poles for the lessons.  No matter when you come we’ll put poles in your hands and guide you on your first Nordic Walking experience.  A group Nordic Walk at 6:30pm will end the day, again poles will be available if you don’t have your own.

Complete details and schedule is available at www.greatlakesnordicwalkers.com

Hope to see you there!
