Shoes for Nordic Walking

I often get asked about shoes for Nordic Walking. It’s a very simple answer, whatever shoe works best for your foot and your style of walking. Basically a good walking shoe will have a well padded heel for the initial impact, will be a little wider through the ball of the foot, will be fairly flexible through the forefoot and should turn up a little at the toes to make it easy to roll your foot. Beyond that it’s all about fit and comfort.

Take the time to visit a shop that carries a variety of walking shoes and let them fit you. Know that you might buy a walking shoe a half size bigger than your everyday shoes so your toes have room to work against the ground. Try more than one pair and walk around the store to check out the fit. You might even put different shoes on each foot to compare them. Be prepared to invest in a good pair that provides the fit, stability and cushioning for your foot.

Walking shoes like running shoes are good for 300-500 miles and then they begin to lose their stability and shock absorption capacity. At that time it is time to replace them. Whenever I get a new twinge in a knee, ankle or hip I check my shoes. I’m also careful to mark it on my calendar when I think they will need replacement.

If your feet are not happy no one is happy! Be diligent about your shoes!

Stuck at a Desk? Save your life with a Walk

A recent study by the University of Utah found that the health hazards of sitting all day can be offset by simply walking for two minutes each hour. It’s a fascinating study showing that low intensity exercise had no effect but “light intensity activity such as walking for just two minutes each hour was associated with a 33 percent lower risk of dying.
So if you’re stuck at a desk sitting all day save your life with a quick spin around the office. And remember that this also applies to time spent waiting at airports or train stations.  Get up and walk for a simple 2 minutes to break up the deadly act of sitting.

Fitness on a Stick

I’ve used this phrase before, in fact every year when it’s Minnesota State Fair time it’s an appropriate play on words here in the North land.  If you’ve never been to our state fair you’ve missed eating just about anything you can imagine served on a stick. After all of that eating you really need to do something about the extra calories so it’s a great time to grab your sticks, aka your Nordic Walking poles and walk off that weight before it settles on those hips.

Things on a stick are fun, creative and for the most part taste really good.  The same is true of Nordic Walking.  Just a taste is so good that it will leave you wanting more.  The good news is that Nordic Walking, different from waffles or deep fried pickles on a stick, is actually good for you and can be enjoyed every day instead of just once a year at the fair.

So get on the stick and go for a walk, you know you want to!

Fall Classes on the Calendar!

If you live in the St Cloud area please check out my calendar of fall classes in the local communities.  There are classes and Tastes in Cold Spring, Sartell, Sauk Rapids and St Joseph. I’m working on one for the New London / Spicer area so stay tuned on that one.

Also the St Cloud Nordic Walking group is meeting at Lake George on Tuesdays at 11am. Find us by the granite fountains by the 4th St entrance to the park.  This is a group organized through the St Cloud PD support group but is open to everyone.  Walks are free and I’ll have extra poles for newbies with me. Pass the word!

Summer is coming to an end, what’s still on your play list?

The countdown for summer is here.  The radio is talking about the state fair, the stores are full of back to school and the days are getting just a little shorter.  Where did the time go?  It was our first summer on the lake and I still have so much left that I want to do!

But there are only 1,440 minutes in each day.

I’m always trying to strike a deal with time. I only need a little bit more each day, just a few more minutes, maybe an hour here or there. But what I know is that there’s never enough time and time is not a deal maker.

Time is constant. You can’t “find” more time, you can’t “make” more time, you can’t “create” more time.  No matter how you clock it there are still only 1,440 minutes in each day.

Life lesson: You can only choose how you use time.

So I try to make peace with time and make intentional decisions. Right now I think it’s time for a short paddle before the rain moves in!

Going outside can change your brain!

There was a recent article in the New York Times that is focused on how simply walking outside surrounded by nature is not only good for your body, mind and spirit but there is a new study that shows how your brain responds to being out there.  I love it when what we know to be true from our own experiences is supported by science.

Breakfast is literally Breaking the Fast

Jumpstart your metabolism in the morning by eating within the first hour of your day.

Breakfast = Break Fast

When I get up in the morning I grab a sip of water and head out the door for my walk. Upon my return I reach for a cup of coffee. Before I leave for work I down a glass of juice. It’s often 9am or later when I finally have something to eat. At that point it’s typically fruit and yogurt, maybe with a little granola. I’m just not the early morning breakfast eater. But maybe I need to change my habits.

Our bodies are hungry in the morning. It’s time to break the night time fast and fuel up for the day. At Women on the Move they talked about feeding the fire to get it going. Think about your fire as having been banked with ashes for the night and it’s time to get it blazing again, to get the energy going. I kinda like the metaphor.

Time management will be my biggest obstacle in changing my morning routine. If I’m going to do it, I need to do it in a deliberate fashion. Instead of quickly eating my fruit and granola standing in the kitchen when I get back from my walk, roughly an hour after I got up, I need to set aside time to enjoy breaking the fast.

It’s all about nurturing yourself. The least you can do for you in the morning is make a breakfast, simple but nutritious, and sit down in front of a window to enjoy it. Feel the fire in your belly coming to life and energizing you for the day!

Creating New Nordic Walkers

Sometimes it only takes a taste to know that something is really good!

Nordic Walking is like that, try it and I’m pretty sure you’ll like it.  That’s what happened last week.  My Nordic walking classes here in the Cold Spring area have begun, I’m expanding the kingdom of fitness for the Nordic Walking Queen.  There are 11 in the Cold Spring 3 week course, 20 seniors at the Senior Connection Taste in Sartell and 18 at the Intro in New London.  That’s a lot of walkers!

It’s so much fun to be back teaching and guiding these classes.  I love sharing my passion for poles with new people and love it that they trust enough to sign up for these classes even tho they may not really know what Nordic walking is all about.  I’ve yet to see anyone else out this way walking with poles but that’s about to change.

Thank you to everyone who came out to try Nordic Walking.  I trust we will walk many miles together on our journey towards confidence and strength as Nordic Walkers! Watch for Nordic walking clubs in your area!
