Natural Benefits

Todays morning walk featured 8 blue herons, one egret, 3 momma ducks with their babies, and one large tent set up for an employee picnic. That’s not counting all of the song birds and the very red sunrise. It was definitely worth getting up this morning and heading out for that walk!

Namekogen River Paddle

There are some things that sit out on your bucket list for a long time before you finally get around to doing them.  Paddling the Namekogen River in Cable Wisconsin with the HOW group has been one of those things.  Last weekend we did it!  16 women in the woods, 13 on the water on Saturday in kayaks and canoes.  The river was high and fast with all of our rain this year, so it was quite the adventure.  It was more than a paddle, it was a weekend of connecting and sharing our stories. Thanks to everyone who came along.

Go into the Woods!

One of my favorite places to walk is the MN Landscape Arboretum.  Today we were here for Arboretum Outdoors with Hoigaards.  I love my job!  I got to come out and do 2 beautiful walks on trail this afternoon.  The hardest thing is deciding which trail to take.

The first walk at 1pm found us taking off the rubber tips, extending our poles just a bit and heading off into the woods on the Ridge Trail. There was just enough of a breeze to keep the mosquitos away 🙂  This summer trail is a winter XC trail so it meanders through the woods, up and down the hills and skirts the edge of the wetlands along the way.  It felt so good to be off the hard pavement, giving my body a break. We even got buzzed by some gigantic dragon flies under the trees.

Hard to believe we’re just a few miles west of Minneapolis!

New Nordic Walkers on the North Shore!

What a great weekend!  It was “take 2” for the Nordic Walking weekend on the North Shore.  Originally planned for April but postponed due to a snowstorm it was a beautiful weekend to be up north in Minnesota along Lake Superior.

It all started at the Duluth YMCA with a Taste of Nordic Walking Friday Morning

then we walked with the local Parkinson’s Support Group before heading further north to Grand Marais

Saturday morning we walked alongside Lake Superior with a group of ladies from Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply

Home tonite and very happy about the weekend adventure.  If we make new Nordic Walkers one walker at a time it was a 20 walker weekend.  Watch out North Shore,  the Nordic Walking movement has begun!

Dancing in the Rain!

ok, so we weren’t dancing we were Nordic Walking once again in the rain.  Will it ever end here in Minnesota?  It’s been wet and cold since we got home the end of March.  Gardens and yards are very green but we haven’t spent much time sitting by the pool.  Nordic Walking Tuesdays are back this month at Hoigaards.  We stopped to do some air guitar with our poles at Centennial Lakes this week.  If we have to be wet at least we can have some fun!

Outdoor Surprises by Nature

When in nature, prepared to be surprised

Arboretum Outdoors with Hoigaards…it was almost 7pm and it was getting dark, another storm on it’s way.  We’d walked the 3 Mile Drive clockwise, doing all the uphills, and slipped into the wild flower garden to finish in the woods. Hoping for a few wild flowers we were surprised by so much more.

We knew rain was imminent but suddenly we couldn’t hurry along. The trail was dense with spring woodland blooms; hepatica, ginger, trilliums, marsh marigolds, california poppies, virginia bluebells, anemone, yellow windbells bloodrood, scilla and more.  Dainty blossoms reaching up out of the dense carpet of last year’s leaves.  We slowed down in awe of spring.

A photographer asked us if we had seen the owls.  When we replied no, he jumped up and guided us back up the hill.  In the crook of an oak there was a young owl, perhaps a barred owl?,  fluffy and cute and oh so wonderful.  The second baby was in a smaller tree by the pond and the parents kept watch from above.  There were several of us looking, taking pictures and enjoying the moment.  It was soooo quiet.

That’s the way of nature, she likes to surprise us.  Just when you think you know what’s there, what to expect, what’s ahead on the trail or river you get caught off guard.  As Peter Leschak wrote in his article, Natural balance in the Sunday Startribune “No matter how intimate you are with a given landscape, you’ll often be surprised.”

No need to venture past your back yard.  Look past what you know and see what’s waiting to surprise you with wonder and beauty and awe.

Nine New Nordic Walkers

Couldn’t resist putting that up:) There were nine walkers at Hoigaards for the Intro this morning. They all did very well with the poles and get extra points for walking in the cold wind.

Moving Day with National Parkinson’s Foundation

Saturday morning I took my Nordic Walking poles to the Moving Day with the National Parkinson’s Foundation.  Nordic Walking was part of the Struthers Parkinson’s Clinic Movement Pavilion.  It was cold and wet but the energy and enthusiasm of the walkers made it feel like a sunny day.

I began my journey with Struthers in January of 2012 when Liz Ogrene, founder of Pedal and Roll, asked me if I would lead some Nordic Walking with Parkinson’s patients and their families.  I didn’t know alot about Parkinson’s at that time but Liz was so enthusiastic that I had to say yes.  The goal was to give our Parkinson’s friends an excuse to get outside even in Minnesota winter  and so we walked outdoors every month during the “winter of no snow”.

I’ve learned so much about “movement as medicine” for Parkinson’s.  Maria Walde-Douglas, PT with Struthers, has been my mentor for the programs.  Nordic Walking poles encourage full body big movement and it’s amazing to witness the benefits gained.  The additional balance and stability of the poles leads to a more rhythmic walking pattern, better symmetry of body movement, longer stride and more natural arm swing, less fatigue and enhanced cardio benefits.

The program has grown to include monthly walks with Capistrant Parkinson’s Clinic.  We met at Har Mar Mall during the winter months and now are enjoying walks on Thursday afternoons in the garden area and neighborhood of Bethesda Hospital.  We even walked around the beautiful capital grounds yesterday.

It has been my pleasure and honor to work with these programs.  All of our walks are inclusive but these programs allow us to slow down and focus more on specific movement patterns for Parkinson’s patients.  You’ll find dates and locations on my calendar for Pedal and Roll walks on the west side of town and please email me for contact information for the Capistrant programs.

North Shore Nordic Walking Cancelled due to Winter

Due to the ongoing winter in northern Minnesota I will not be going to Duluth or Grand Marais this weekend for Nordic Walking demo’s. There’s just too much snow and cold for it to be fun or safe walking. We’re rescheduling for June 14-16. Watch for details soon!
